My first year and I only did one extract batch, immediately went to all grain and now am moving up to 10 gallon batches. I've done all of my brewing so far without starters, and have been happy with the results. But I've just built a stirplate and will be incorporating starters into my routine, hopefully for even better results.
This is going to sound really cheap, but I'm curious - can I take a single vial of yeast, pitch it into 1 liter of starter wort, then after 12 hours or so split it into two fresh (separate) liters of wort? If I let those 2 starters go another 12-18 hours it seems like I would have 2 pitches, one for each 5 gallon carboy??
