I'm with you, Push. While the idea of DIY appeals to me, I realized that I just don't have enough time to learn electronics when I could be learning about how to make better beer. I toyed around with making a stir plate for several weeks before eventually buying a used
Bellco for less $$ than buying the parts to make one from scratch. I can't do everything myself, and I admire those who are building their own.

I use the KISS method my potentiometer worked ok but like most postings I had to F&%k with it to find the sweet spot, I added a small automotive toggle switch that lites when in the on position this little bit of an extra load (ghetto Resistor) fixed the sensitivity of the pot. works well I will only toss the stir bar if I turn it all the way up with a single flask (duel flask stir plate)

Thanks to TMB, and his amazing electrical ingenuity, I now have a fully functional and working stirplate. He made me the control box, wiring and all, all i had to do was hook up two wires and i can control my fan from barely moving, all the way up until i boost it with the "turbo" switch. I have a wlp 530 starter on it right now and couldnt be more happy!

Also my buddy gae me a 1/6 hp motor for my newly aquired barley crusher, just gotta figure out what pullys I need to get her rigged. For now though its the drills job. Im like a kid in a candy store right now :D

Don't do pulleys/belts. Do a quick search for 'spider coupling'. Henning told us about them on a different thread. They will couple that BC of yours to your motor very easily - and much more safely. I hate to see a fellow turtle lover with one or more less digits.

Especially important advice if you brew without pants.

Now I'm pissed off. This seemed like a simple project, but now I see there are 5 pages of crap about it (and counting).

I put this together with my 4 year old daughter, she thinks I'm bitchin' sometimes. But she's in for another let down when I show her how the stir bar just wiggles (not spinning) around the bottom of the flask and won't do shit else no matter how many cd cases I put between the box and the flask, or whether I stir to get it spinning, or I turn the rheo-effing-stat up or down, or turn the switch on and off, whatever. I might just have to belch at her and say, "fuck it, sweetheart" like I did to my wife that day at the altar.

Has anyone else had this problem?

I've tried setting the flask on the box when the fan is on and when the fan is off...
