Traveling in Europe 2014

Thu Oct 31, 2013 2:50 pm

My dad, brother and I will be traveling through Europe at the end of September 2014. We plan on going to Hungary, Austria, southern Germany and northern Italy. We will be going to Oktoberfest in Munich but everything else is up in the air. Any must see destinations or things we should do? Also if anyone else is planning on being in these areas around this time we could meetup for a beer and talk a little homebrew.

Not quite Southern Germany, but if you can make up to a town in Thuringen called Bad Köstritz, the Köstritzer brewery is an awesome place. It's in a very small town. I recommend emailing to coordinate a visit well in advance. They give tours for free, but they're never busy.

The tour of Pilsner Urquell is pretty special.

Unfiltered, unpasteurised pilsner, served from wooden casks in underground cellars. One of my beer highlights.

This region is beautiful so do not make it all about beer. Wine festival and baths in Budapest. Vienna downtown. Agustiner beer hall in Salzburg. Weissbier in Freilassing. Camba Bavaria in Truchtlaching if you have a car. Andechs monastery. Bamberg is beautiful plus beer variety plus Weyermann if with car. We have a small brewing group in Munich. Send me a pm when you have set dates.

I lived in Bamberg for a couple years and you can spend an entire week visiting the breweries there. Mahrs Brau is actually a small brewery there with an amazing beer garden and some fantastic beer. I suggest the "U" beer or the keller. It is heaven on earth. St Georgen Brau is just outside of the city in a town called Buttenhiem. Definitely worth a visit there too. Best keller beer on earth and the food is fantastic. I can go on and list the all the breweries if your interested. Just google bamberg beer. If you go anywhere in Bavaria make it Bamberg. Its a three hour train ride from Munich and about an hour from nurnberg.
