There's no doubt about that. My brown ale got a "sharp over carbonation" from one judge and the other gave me "boost the carb". That said, they both gave me fair scores and I knew going in that it wouldn't be the best brown there. Also, I didn't think the kolsch that advanced was even in the top three favorite batches of it that I've made. There's definitely a "luck" factor to it in as far as what the judge's palate likes on that certain day. We do make our own luck though by researching and brewing often so we at least stand a chance. I'd have my head held high fo sho if I had that many beers got to BOS. Congrats!

the judges seemed quite generous with their scores in Kansas City this year. Almost like Janis told them - "Hey, these people are paying $12 an entry, so give them some good scores!". Either way it is feedback put to good use. I did get some helpful comments for the rebrew of my ofest that I put to good use.

Remember that the judges are judging to style, not for "likeability". There are a lot of great tasting beers that lack balance so they don't score all that well.
Think of a body building competition where some dude works his upper body but not his legs. He may have a huge chest and arms, but he'll lose to the guy that is symmetrical and has smaller upper body but legs that balance them.

(I think brewchops has it right- blending is the way to go. Vanilla doesn't really fade).

ok, make it a chick with perfect tits but a lumpy, lopsided ass and a butterface.
You'd probably still hit it, but she wouldn't win the fucking beauty contest.
