I think that next year the BN Club should try to win the Gambrinus Club Award. Seems like a more meaningful distinction than club of the year, which rewards size over quality. I think we could do it. Does the BN enter club only competitions? I've never heard anything about that.

I don't think the BN has ever entered club only competitions, at least not that I know of?

Oh, and BTW, Congratulations to the members of the BN Army out there in the middle of nowhere, with no local club, who love the shows and enter your beers in competition as the Brewing Network. This year's award is for you!! A few years ago folks like Doc, Tasty and Myself had considered entering under the BN to help gain points for a CoTY win.. But, no need for that = we already have a local club. And, as it turns out, you guys don't need any help from us anyways to win on your own. Congrats!!

We haven't yet. We have held several inner-club competitions, but we weren't smart enough to coordinate those with a club only competition. I'll bring it up for a vote at our next meeting.

This has been an entertaining thread.

I appreciate the Gordon Strong response to him winning Ninkasi with blended beers: "Brew Better Beers"

Bring it strong, and brew better beer. Your club win.

I don't enter under the BN, as I am part of a small local club. My club doesn't vote for officers. We don't have dues. There aren't meeting minutes. Had we brewed better beer as judged in the blind tasting, we would have won club of the year. There is some weird logic that looks like 'my beer is just as good as your beer'. Sorry, it's obviously not.

Don't worry. Next year BrewingTV will edge out TBN for club of the year. :P

The only one allowed to have sour grapes is Nathan Smith. Dude got Robbed (probably put more points than anyone else towards the award too)!

EDIT: Nate did you enter under DOZE this year too? Either way. Robbed! And a perfect example of why the club name under the brewer name has little meaning to others. Nate is a great guy and an awesome brewer. I want him to win no matter what club he enters under.

While I love the BN with all my heart (and my butt) I'm not a BN-clubber, nor will I ever be. I've got a great local club (Worts of Wisom for those of you at NHC), and entering competitions, putting together booths and events is a great bonding experience with folks in my general area (Cookie Crisp Porter? WTF?). Awards? Recognition? Who the fuck cares? If that's what gives you a boner, bring 250 kegs of crappy beer to club night and win a golden toilet.

If winning awards is that important to you, figure a way to raise the bar. The BN winning, and DOZE and QUAFF before them have been marks on how the hobby has progressed and improved overall.

Love you BeerPal, but in arguing the spirit of the award, you've lost the spirit of the hobby.

Cheers,

Greg

+1

And I'll submit that if beerpal had kicked in about 14 points for DOZE, we wouldn't be having this conversation. You can spend the year trying to change the rules, or spend the year brewing beers that can win in the first round. I know what I would do.
