Why bother with hooking up a hose to the IN ball lock when there is positive pressure from the keg pushing out the CO2 that was initially put into the keg?

One reason is that you can see when the keg is full before you push beer into (and out of) the relief valve.

That has never happened to me ..... Sometimes I just want too many extra pints to fit.

Yes. But to be honest, it probably isn't really a big deal whichever way you vent the keg. As long as it's purged before, and after, filling, you will be eliminating most, if not all, O2 contact.

Wow Philly, I feel like I'm reading a post I wrote myself. Ive been dealing with the same issue for months now. It damn frustrating as my beer taste great at first then goes downhill fast. I see people all over the boards posting similar problems. It never seams like anyone comes up with a solid solution. I've suspected everything from my carbonaton to sanitation to brewing practices and back again. I've replaced almost everything in my kegging system and still having this problem. I'm almost to the point of throwing the whole dame kegging set up away at once and starting from scratch. I'm going to bottle condition my next batch and see what happens. If no issues then at least I can say it's 100% my kegging set up. Let's stay in touch as it seems we are banging our heads on the same issue.

Jeez, I'm sorry I didn't reply to this sooner. Missed it somehow.

The CO2 hose simply slides over the skinny nipple on the 2-hole carboy cap. It's a snug fit but not so tight that the hose wont pop off if the pressure gets too high.
