Question...

Has anyone attempted to server out of a bottling bucket style container?

I was thinking of priming 5 gallons and serving it cask style for a party--i know huge obligation to get my friends to kill 5 gallons--

I was planning on popping a valve into the lid of a bucket. The only things I was worried about would be 1) would the bucket hold the pressure 2) I would need some sort of breather to equalize the pressure.

The pressure part I was going to solve with a little bit of scrap wood and build a cradle(which I would going to also use to keep it still while serving) that would strap the lid down tight.
The vacuum forming came to me today, how to handle that?

Or am I being completely silly... but figured a fun way to kick some beer.

Rather than risk 5 gal of hard work on an experiment, if your looking for a cheaper alterative to a full kegging system you can probably get a used corny ($35), a co2 charger http://www.kegworks.com/product.php?productid=21295, and a picnic tap for probably around $60 (all probably availible at you LHS). +, because using CO2 would still be ok if you didn't kill it all at once. From there you can upgrade a full kegging system with the addition of a CO2 tank when it makes sense.

This would work fine. You don't need to hold any pressure. Just keep the beer as cold as you want it, and serve it with gravity. The CO2 will stay in there as long as it's cold - at least for the night.

If you are serving it "on cask", that means that you will be filling the void with air - and the beer will be horribly oxidized in a day or so - hence the reason to drink the whole thing. You can just use the lid from a fermentation bucket, and leave the airlock out. As the beer drains, the air fills the headspace.
