Has anybody here brewed this recipe from the book? How did it turn out?

I brewed this recipe last Halloween for an x-mas party at my house. Since I got started a little late in the fall for such a huge beer, I toned it down to around 1065 or so. The beer came out great and people really enjoyed it. It definitely didn't taste like a 7%+ beer although it was lagered in the keg for quite some time before serving.

I plan on brewing up something like this again for the holidaze, but with some changes. I will brew it to around 8% with maybe some aromatic/munich or melanoiden malt to boost the malt flavors, and I will mash a little higher to leave behind a nice full body to the beer. We also added orange zest and will do so again but get some fresher oranges, and a bit more than we did last time. I also recommend not to skimp on the spices. Buy them as fresh as possible and as good a quality as possible. You won't be disappointed.

Next time I will lie and tell you to add Frank's Red Hot instead!

Bottled this year's batch of ol yule loggy. This time I cut the spice bill in half because even after a year of aging, the first batch is almost undrinkable.
