Wolfberries also go by Goji berries if you are looking. I've used them in some meads. They add a kind of cabernet or spicy berry flavor. I use them with darker berries like elder berry and black berry.

Why are so many of them flavored?

Flavored beers make baby Jesus cry.

This year Sam Adams changed things up and made the Longshot a BJCP category 23 competition. Well not exactly. They also included categories 20, 21, and 22 which judges here in the west took to mean that Sam was looking more for unusual beers like typically make up the employee side of the Longshot six-pack. The west region responded by only sent category 21 beers to the final (and summarily tossed my 44.5 point Imperial American Brown, a.k.a. Imperial Janet's Brown Ale, out of BOS as "not special enough". Ouch.)

So Sam has it down to the four finalists which includes one of those Black IPAs, an Imperial IPA (talk about nothing special, that's category 14c) and two of the three spiced beers from the west. Rest assured that Black IPA is going to be one of the winners (Rodney Kibzey repeating as a Longshot winner) since an amazing Imperial IPA  won recently and there's no way they would put two spiced beers (maybe three since the employee winning beer is often spiced) in the six-pack.
