Re: Adding Gelatin at Bottling?

Update...

The bottles that had been primed along with gelatin and were sitting at room temp in the cabinet have developed good carbonation in 5 days. Learning: Although gelatin settles the yeast out, there is enough left to give decent carbonation.

Not sure if they will cause chill haze when chilled. Will post an update later.

I was curious too... What I did this past Sunday before bottling:

- Filled 1 Cup water w/ hot tap water
- Mixed 5oz priming sugar and 1/2tsp into sollution
- Heated solution to boiling for 1-2 minutes
- Stirred into bottling bucket

I filled a Party Pig, 24 bottles, and a crushed plastic water bottle (that's filled about halfway).

It's 3 days later and the bottles are clearer than some 2 month old bottles I have laying a round, and the plastic bottle is expanding normaly. I guess there's enough yeast in suspension to keep the carbonation going.

I'll let you know Sunday what the verdict is...

Update!

It's been 5 days... and I couldn't wait. I threw a bottle in the fridge this morning, and as soon as I got home today I headed straight for the fridge. Took that bad boy out, set it on the counter, grabbed a bottle opener and.... fssst! Good sign... then boom! Gussher! Thankfully I had a glass handy. Poured that sucker, head ret was kinda weak, but hey... it was a cream ale wuddya expect. Wasn't as clear as I thought it'd be. There still was a good amount of turbidity in it. But like I said it was only 5 days.

Dukes - Out!

Once the gelatin fined bottles (that were put into the fridge right away without carbonation), got carbonated, I moved them to the fridge. The haze did return but the beer cleared in a week instead of the usual 3 weeks or so.

Learning: After primary, crash cool the fermentor for a couple of days to develop chill haze. Then, bottle with priming sugar & gelatin. Leave bottles cold in the fridge for 3 - 4 days. Move to cabinet for a week (over 70 F) and then chill & drink. If you want it brilliant, leave bottles in the fridge for another week or so before drinking.

BTW, I have tried the other method also: Crash cool fermentor, add Gelatin and shake vigorously. Leave cold in fridge for 3 - 5 days. Then, bottle with priming sugar and some dry yeast (1.5 grams for 1 gallon). After carbonation at room temp (over 70 F) for a week, chill & drink. If you want it brilliant, leave bottles in the fridge for another week or so before drinking.

Thanks for sharing.
I just did the second method. I added gelatin to the primary and mixed it up with one of these. http://www.northernbrewer.com/winemaking/mix-stir-plastic-24.html. I then proceed to cold crash it to 32 degrees F. I could watch the junk drop lower and lower. It is pretty much cleared at 12-14 hours, but I'm going to leave it at 32 Degrees for a week, just to make sure. It is an American Wheat, so this should really test this process. I'm seeing good results already. From what I hear the gelatin slug should make the transfer easier too. We'll see. Thanks for the idea IBG.
