getting beer to NHC

Tue Mar 02, 2010 9:59 am

People traveling from far away--(let's say New York...)

Have any of you brought beer to NHC from far away?

What are your thoughts on how this could be done?

Thanks for all the help!C?

I've thought about a lot of them, and found nothing real satisfactory.

A full corny is about 50#, do you have a suitcase that can hold it as checked luggage? I still wonder if it would make it through screening. A big heavy metal cylinder would certainly look suspicious to me.

Greyhound can get 2 cornies from Florida to MN in about a day for $88. Sadly, their restrictions specifically prohibit alcohol.

I checked Amtrack for getting me there, the 62 hours each way drove me away from there. I could drive it in 26 hours.

Looks to me like the only way to get more than a few bottles there is to drive it yourself. If you just want to bring a few bottles, put them in your checked luggage.

Graciously via email:

Michael Fairbrother wrote:I have organized getting beer to the NHC from NH the last several years. The easiest have someone drive, after that the next option is shipping. To ship, I picked up boxes 9x9x36 from Uline, and boxed up the 5 gallon kegs. The kegs I would cut down to the height of the kegs, and I would double them up, otherwise they break apart. I would bring duffel bags with me, and the empty kegs were brought back (open, and in the duffel bag) as luggage. The jockey box was pretty expensive to ship back and forth. CO2 I would work with the organizing club to get a loaner.

Is he bucking for votes or what?

Seriously though, this is a man who deserves our votes!

I am interested in hearing about this as well, as our club is coming up for the first time and planning on bringing kegs with us. Now we are going to be driving, which makes it a bit easier. However for those of you who have driven with kegs, are there problems in crossing state lines, as we are driving from TX? Also, did you do anything to keep your kegs cool/cold while in transit?

Some of these http://www.midwestsupplies.com/sanitary ... 10-ct.html on the keg posts might help the cause. If you are pulled over .40 cents a keg will probably be cheap to cut the hassle factor down.

Are there problems? Probably. But in addition to the caps Henning pointed at, the other thing to do is obey the same idea as ammunition and guns. Never keep the two in the same space. :)

Yeah, when we drove to Vegas, we drove fast. :)

Also we kept most of kegs in our keg cooler boxes and that did pretty well, but really most homebrew will survive some time warm a-otay. Just don't make it hot, unless you've got a ton of hops. Despite our "drive fast" plan - the firkin of DIPA got really warm on the drive in, but it survived to be damn damn tasty.
