Sanitizing Nalgene Bottles

Mon Mar 16, 2009 3:34 pm

I'm looking to collect some yeast for repitching and thought I'd use a nalgene bottle as JZ has recommended a number of times. I seem to recall him saying that he autoclaves his, so I figured I could sterilize it in the pressure cooker. I ran it through a 15psi cycle for 15 minutes & let it cool, but when I popped the lid the bottle had deformed from the heat. Has anyone else run one of these thorough a pressure cooker? I had it on a small wire rack with the lid off so it wasn't directly in the water at the bottom of the cooker. I did have to put it on its side since it was too tall to fit otherwise but I don't see why that would cause a problem.

Heh... that's strange. I thought that was the whole point of using those bottles - that they could take that heat.

seriously....is it cheaper to buy nalgene bottles and yeast harvesting supplies....oh and to spend the time collecting yeast then to just buy more of it?

yeast has become the cheapest ingredient....why re-use it?

if you're after the fun of it then more power to you. :jnj

I personally would never EVER use any Nalgene product in brewing. I can smell their plastic from ten feet away. I think that pond water tastes better than pure water from a nalgene bottle.

if you want a good sterilization product look for something like this
suck it

When you want to pitch into 11 gallons of 1.096 wort, then yes it is worth repitching. The bottle was a newer one that was BPA free. Maybe that was good for something.

Yeah, Nalgene is stinky to me too... I make my starters in a brown glass 64oz growler.

That's what I use. They're microwavable.

i don't think that anyone has access to an autoclave...but just in case they do...

ALWAYS leave the cap loose while in the autoclave. As soon as it's done and you take out the bottle, tighten the cap then. If you tighten the cap before...............BOOM!

You want to use polypropalene (sp?) bottles. These are autoclavable. You won't have to worry about ingesting BPA and growing man tits.
