What's going on in my Carboy?

Mon Feb 09, 2009 6:09 am

Hey guys,

New to the forum here and I was just wondering what you guys thought of these pictures. I'm brewing an american pale ale using white labs california yeast. The yeast was pitched into the carboy about 9 1/2 hours before these pictures were taken. I used one vial and made the starter the day before. It could have been aerated more than it was I think. The starter size was 1.75 Liters. What are these clumps... could it be the Whirlfloc?

Dude.

Sure you didn't use the Platinum Series California Lava Lamp Ale

Not a cal ale expert. I have seen the same chunks in the begining ferment of an english yeast one time. I gave it a good shake and it took off and fermented out normal.

Brreak out your bong and good luck.

What you were seeing was just chunks of trub (break material) rising to the top of the beer because of the begining fermentation. One of the first visible signs of fermentation is quite often changes in the layer of trub at the bottom of the fermenter. You might see cracks at the edges, or bits rising. Nothing wrong at all.

If the trub coagulates into little 3-eyed creatures who present you with a declaration of independence, I'd watch out...

Other than that you're fine.. :D
