Yeast Cell Count?

Sun Jan 25, 2009 7:54 pm

Hey guys, I pitched a Wyeast Propagator smack pack into 1 liter of starter. That thing fermented great with intermitent swirling every few hours. I then pitched the whole liter into 2 liters of fresh starter. By my calculations and a little interpretation of John Palmers chart, I should be somewhere around 200 billion? Does this sound right? I want to pitch this (bohemian lager) into a 1038 american lager to build up yeast for a 1050 vienna lager. Can anyone see any problems here with my cell count? should I do one more step? or just pitch it into the 1038 wort?

Thanks,

Jay

I'm not totally familiar with John's chart off the top of my head so please post a link if you have one.

But I think you are going to be a little low. The prop pack contains 30 billion cells. You pitched into a 1L starter which I believe should yield 45 billion cells. Then into a 2L which should yield ~90 billion.

Based on Jamil's Mr. Malty Yeast Calculator you are going to need 269 billion cells for a 5 gallon batch of 1.038 American lager.

I could be way off, but that's just what I am coming up with off the top of my head.

Hey I'm new at this so I am wondering if when doing it this way, are you supposed to decant each time that you add new wort?

thanks,
Brannon
