Yeast is a strange little beast....

Wed Nov 12, 2008 9:04 am

Brewed JZ's Orval clone on Monday night. Did a 2L starter on Sunday with some WLP530 (Abbey), since the Bastone is not available now. Great brewday. Pitched and cleaned up in 6 hrs. total. By Tuesday morning, had a nice 3/4" krausen starting to rise. Checked the temp and krausen Tuesday night just before bed - 2".

Go to check on it this morning. Walk out into the garage. "Oh shit! That airlock is filled with [POW!]". Just then, the carboy cap and airlock hit the ceiling. Clean and sanitize the BBBOT that I should have used in the first place. Clean the spooge off of the ceiling. Oh well. At least I got the show!

I hate cleaning the BBBOT and rarely use it. on the two batches of dubbel I made last week I covered the carboy openings with foil. i checked before bed and they both seemed stable at 3" of krowsin (6.5 gal carboys). next morning both had blown the cover off and were erupting like volcanos. I tried using some foam control but i couldnt even get it into the carboy. i had to leave them like this and go to class for 8 hours. came home and the volcanoes had settled but the openings had been uncovered for who knows how long. i'm switching to 8 gallon plastic buckets soon. hate the BBBOT.

The Belgian Specialty w/Brett. Oh, and since my BBBOT is a PVC pipe, I just put in on my Doc-O-Cleaner and shoot warm PBW through it as soon as I am done with it.

You have some great timing. I've had to clean one off the ceiling, and another I caught with the airlock full of krausen before it could shoot off. Never managed to time it so I could see the explosion though.

I had a Russian Imperial Stout go crazy on me last week.

I Checked her in the morning before heading to work and could see that I was heading for disaster, so I hit up these forums as soon as I got to my desk. I learned a couple of tricks and went home with the hopes of employing them, but, as is my dirty Polish luck, I instead spent 10 minutes searching through my closet with a flashlight looking for the airlock and stopper.
