Got my Longshot Results and a free Shirt

Tue Nov 20, 2012 7:21 am

Yesterday I received my Sam Adams results and a free longshot/sam adams shirt. The judges comments were very well written and well received. I even had a Grand Master II Judge review one of my entries.

31/50 for my Spec Ale (Rye IIPA) and 38.5/50 for my Irish Red

I wrote all the judges comments here if your interested.

Those are nice scores. It's funny how one national judge says you have too much hop flavor in your Irish Red and the other National and Certified judges say there is no hop flavor.

Again, nice scores and congrats on the shirt.

Yeah, Irish Red is a crazy style, so many exceptions. I was more bummed about the Rye Red IIPA, It was a great beer and looking back I should of put it into the IPA category.

Beers with rye in them are really a tough sell unless the rye is VERY noticeable. In a heavily hopped double IPA it was probably difficult for the judges to pick up the rye enough and it probably would've scored better as a Imperial IPA instead.

In the last comp I entered, I put a rye saison into the straight saison category and it took a gold. The rye was so well blended into the beer that I couldn't even pick up the rye by the time I entered it into the competition.

Yea I got that impression also. Since I've only entered 2 comps I want to send the same beer to different category's next.
