Hitching a Ride to OBF

So Ms Pies and I were planning on hiring a car and driving to Portland from SF for Oregon Brewers Festival. But the car hire people want to charge an extra $300-$500 on top of the hire fee cos it's a one way hire.

Our flights are already booked out of Portland on the 25th July. So we can't do a round trip with the car and then fly out of SF.

Is there any BNer out there planning on driving to Portland?
And have space for 2 more in the car?
I can share the driving and obviously we'll share the costs of getting there.

So far our accommodation in SF is booked until the morning of the 19th. And we're booked to arrive in Portland on the 21st. We were thinking of taking the coast road North, but the hire seems excessively expensive.

Why not just get a one way rental from a car company. I know Alamo & Budget do one way rentals.
Is there an issue with driver's licenses or being able to rent a vehicle because your foreigners?

Because for a one way rental, they charge an extra $300-$500 on top of the rental price.

We might as well fly up there.

Motor has mentioned taking the train (Amtrak) from SF to OBF before. Might be worth looking into

I saw that in your original post but couldn't believe it.... I mean I did a price check and it wasn't that much... I think under $300 total for 3 days of rental and drop-off in Portland... maybe I did something wrong but if I were you i'd really try to price ck that again.

Yeah I did another search and found one that will only charge $100 one-way fee. Budget I think. Alamo was definitely $300 one-way.

I'll keep looking around but will probably go with the Budget one. I think meandering up the coast, stopping in at Russian River would be a better way to go than a bus or train.
