Any thoughts on this comp? Been brewing a long time and never really had the desire to enter any competitions. After listening to the BN for a while, I figure it would be good to get some unbiased evaluations. It would be easy enough to deliver several brews to PHX, so shipping costs would be zero. At the same time, I wouldn't want to waste my beer and application fee for a comp that doesn't result in some decent feedback.
If there are any negative responses, feel free to PM me.

Haven't you heard? People down here in Phx don't know anything about beer. The BJCP certification is just something they picked up in an alley for $5.

I guess I'll just make my labels out of $5 bills and I'll do quite well in this competition.
... so Wild, I have my theories, but what is the "Surprise"?

$5 will go a long ways with some of these judges.EagleDude wrote:... so Wild, I have my theories, but what is the "Surprise"?
You mean the town I live in?
Just moved there cuz I was getting tired of being robbed and ducking bullets in Maryvale.

Just enter some beer, you will get some honest feedback that your friends won't necessarily give you. The judging is anonymous and as impartial as you can get in a small comp (compared to NHC). Another good comp is the one ASH holds in the fall; our Oktoberfest. Both competitions try to get as many BJCP judges as possible with novices paired with experienced judges.
In addition, your entry fees help the bottom line of the club who hosts it to a small extent (most of the money goes towards the cost of holding the event). Hey, you might even place well and feel good about getting a good score while contributing to a good cause. Furthermore, feel free to attend the judging; I bet you they need novice judges and stewards.
Save those $5 bills, put an official label on your bottles via rubberband (or whatever they ask you to do) and then brew a nice, fresh IPA! Lol, or treat yourself to a night out at the titty bar!

Thanks for the advise 11amas! ... entered three beers and placed with a bronze and two golds ... including a gold in the IPA category. Now I'm looking forward to drinking each of these beers while reading over the score sheet.
Cheers,

Good job! Way to go man, did you enter TBN as your club? I don't think there are points that the BN gets, just in NHC I believe, but it is cool to bring it strong for the BN.
