Michelob's Mixed Case

Tue Dec 25, 2007 8:49 am

You've all probably seen it in the liquor store, grocery store, even at the local Wal-Mart. 20 Michelob beers (5 Pale, 5 Weizen, 5 Porter & 5 Marzen) for under $20. Meh. I'm kind of vaguely curious when I see it, but come on. $20 could be much better spent on other beer related ingredients, equipment, or.. real beer, right? Well, maybe. But after trying the beers last night, I'd say that's not too bad a deal

I won't go in depth because I really wasn't in the right environment to give these beers the respect of a good tasting, but-

-The Pale was hoppy! Fair amount of bitterness, an assertive floral hop character & well balanced. Pretty tasty, in fact.

-The Weizen was a true Bavarian Weizen with a lot of the typical esters going on that you'd expect. Maybe a bit heavy on the banana, but still very drinkable, albeit a little thin in the finish. Tasty.

-The Porter seemed to be lacking a little bit in just about every flavor component, but it was definitely a porter, and a very well balanced one at that. Just a subtle roastiness, slight bit of fruity esters, & a little bit of caramel flavor reminded me that, while probably brewed with the typical beer drinker in mind, it's still a very drinkable porter. Tasty.

-The Marzen was the dissapointment of the bunch. Not horrible by any means, but just not a Marzen. It is to Ayinger's Marzen what their Amber Bock is to Anchor's Bock. Lacking in a lot of the typical toasted/caramel type flavors you'd expect. They're there, but not nearly enough. And a little bit of a metallic taste that I didn't care for. Just so-so.

Anyone else try these?

A friend bought a couple of boxes and my feelings were in the ballpark SG said.

-Pale Ale: Pretty good for the expectations. No Sierra Nevada, but not the worst PA I've ever had.

-Weizen: Same as SG. Around here it's a good choice given the total lack of other choices.

-The other two: Did not like either and didn't drink more than one each.

Wouldn't ever buy if given better choices but not a bad option for parties if your choices are limited.
-I live in my own little world. But that's okay because they know me there.

I tried it back around Christmas time.

The only thing that did not agree with my tastes at all was the Weizen. Perhaps I had a bad batch, but did not taste like a proper Weizen should. I'm never one to dump out any beer at all....
Ideating - Kolsch, Hefeweizen, Raspberry Wheat
Primary - Chocolate Stout 1.5

Bottles - Pirate's Gold Ale, Northwestern Honey Amber Ale

I had all these a while ago. I really thought they all lacked any body and all the flavors were dumbed down.

Not terrible, but I wouldn't buy them myself.
