I wanted a thicker, creamy foam on my brown porter so I was thinking about adding flaked oats in a small percentage. Does this fit within the style?

Not really, but who cares? You could also use a little bit of wheat malt, instead. 5-8% is not going to contribute much to the flavor - yet it will definately help with the head retention.

Normally I don't care. It is a very good beer. I want to enter my first competition. Just wondering if I would lose points in the brown porter category. It is only a half pound and oats contribute little flavor.

I say go for it. The taste will not be noticeable. What will they do? Take away your mash tun? Samples can be forwarded to my home address, thanks.

I would prefer they take my HLT. I would like a new one.
