Pliny the Younger Clone

I'm planning on brewing a Pliny the Younger clone next week. I think I've settled on a recipe I found online ,and i was just looking for some input. The recipe I"m leaning towards uses an insane amount of Hop Extract. It almost seems like too much, even for a "triple IPA" My main question is does this look like a reasonable hop bill?

12 gallons
Original Gravity: 1.088 (1.075 - 1.090)
Terminal Gravity: 1.008 (1.010 - 1.020)
Color: 6.45 (8.0 - 15.0)
Alcohol: 10.5% (7.5% - 10.0%)
Bitterness: Who knows (60.0 - 120.0)

Ingredients:
28 lb Domestic 2-Row Malt (84.9%)
1.3 lb CarapilsĀ®/CarafoamĀ® (3.9%)
11 oz Crystal Malt 40L (2.1%)
14 Hop Shots (14 x 5ml hop extract) - added during boil, boiled 90 min
2 Hop Shots (2 x 5ml hop extract) - added during boil, boiled 45 min
0.7 oz Columbus (14.0%) - added during boil, boiled 45 min [12.6 IBU]
3.0 oz Simcoe (11.7%) - added during boil, boiled 30 min [37.85 IBU]
1 Whirlfloc Tablet (Irish moss) - added during boil, boiled 15 min
3.0 lb Corn sugar (9.1%) - added during boil*, boiled 10 min
5.0 oz Simcoe (11.7%) - added during boil, boiled 0 min
3.0 oz Centennial Hops (10.9%) - added during boil, boiled 0 min
2.0 oz Amarillo Hops (9.4%) - added during boil, boiled 0 min
1.0 oz Chinook (10.0%) - added during boil, boiled 0 min
48 g Fermentis Safale US-05 dry yeast
1.0 oz Simcoe (11.7%) - dry hop #1
1.0 oz Amarillo Hops (9.4%) - dry hop #1)
1.0 oz Warrior Hops (15.4%) - dry hop #1 )
2.0 oz Columbus (14.0%) - dry hop #2
2.0 oz Centennial Hops (10.9%) - dry hop #2
1.0 oz Simcoe (11.7%) - dry hop #3
1.0 oz Chinook (10.0%) - dry hop #3
0.5 oz Warrior Hops (15.4%) - dry hop #3
2.0 oz Simcoe (11.7%) - dry hop #4
1.0 oz Amarillo Hops (9.4%) - dry hop #4
1.0 oz Columbus (14.0%) - dry hop #4

I've used the Hop Shots when I brewed Evil Twin. Two of them gave a nice, solid hop bitterness that Northern Brewer said would be around 100 IBUs. I've never seen what the IBUs are in PtY, but 14 Hop Shots sounds like a lot. What's your batch size?

The recipe is for 12 gallons. I'll probably scale it down to 9 gallons. And I'll have to add more grain, my efficiency is not as high as the original brewer.

Keep us posted. I'd be interested to hear how it turns out.

Just be sure to save some hops for the rest of us.

I thought the amount of hops was insane as well, but it turned out great!

The only thing I'd recommend is (like all other IIPAs) drinking it fairly young/fresh. I have about 1/2 keg of this left (it was kegged late Sep 2013) and a lot of the hop flavour/aroma that was originally there has subsided.

Let us know how it turns out!

Hey Kal thanks for posting that recipe. Drinking it fresh shouldn't be a problem. My wife is a huge hop head, sometimes i think she has to almost has be chewing on a hop cone before she thinks its a good beer.

I read on your post that you thought it would have better drier, so i think I'm going to drop the C40, and use WLP090 instead of the 05. I've had some good luck with making some drier barley wines with yeast recently.

Sounds like a plan, though I'm not sure I'd completely get rid of the C40. Maybe a combination of slightly reducing the C40 and the carapils? You could even up the plain sugar slightly too. Good luck!
