Citrus Ninja from Westbrook Brewing

Mon Oct 17, 2011 1:01 pm

Has anyone in the Carolinas tried ? It's amazing. All I know is it's single hopped with Cascade and they use grapfruits in it somewhere. I'd love to take a shot at cloning this if anyone knows any more about it.

Attention Carolina Beer Geeks. Westbrook's Citrus Ninja is back and it's extreme! From their web site: The other beer is a new batch of Citrus Ninja Exchange, our double IPA collaboration with The Charleston Beer Exchange. Last year’s batch was a single-hopped Cascade double IPA brewed with 50 lbs of fresh grapefruit and was released on draft only. This year’s version (in our opinion) blows the first batch out of the water. The malt bill is simplified, resulting in a lighter, drier beer – which allows the massive hop additions to shine through. A mix of fresh grapefruit, lemons, limes, and oranges was added to the boil, and this batch also features a blend of several different American and New Zealand hop varieties, instead of just Cascade. It will be on tap and in bottles at the brewery this weekend and will be released throughout SC next week.
Catch it if you can.

Hello again! They pulled the plug on me after I posted this last August. I went to visit the brewery in Charleston last Sept and got a couple bottles there. I then brewed a pale ale version of this called Fruit Bat after talking to the head brewer. Scaled down to 5 gal. I used 2 oranges, 2 limes and a grapefriut chopped up at 8 mins in boil. Centennial and a bit of Citra and Summit in the dry hop. It was awesome and I'm gonna brew a IIPA version this summer. Was gonna call it Giant Fruit Bat but my daughter thinks Flying Fox would be a better name. Some may know why. Btw, I'm back after being awal for 8 months. Really missed the BN Army. Carry on.
