Partial Mash Question - how much water should I pull from my mash and what SG should I expect prior to addition of DME?

Would I be better off batch sparging or fly sparging?

Thanks. Target brew date is 12/17

I usually use a 1.2 quarts of water per lb of grain for the mash, 7 quarts of sparge water - I have not measured volume or gravity at that partial mash stage though. I just add water in my kettle to reach 6.5 gallons before the boil, add the extract with 15 minutes left and have always hit my target OG.

My partial mash setup is to use a 12 quart pot on the stove to mash the grain, then transfer it to a large oblong collander over the brew kettle and then hand-sparge with a pyrex measuring cup with the 7 quarts of water pre-heated in an 8 quart pot on another burner. I suppose you could call this a fly sparge. I'm sure that a batch sparge method would work, I use that now that I am brewing all-grain.

It looks like you have about 7 lbs of grain to mash, I am limited to 5 lbs, which is all that I can fit into the collander.

Not sure if this infor was helpful, best of luck for your session.

Good deal. Thanks. I have a Gott 10-gal cooler w/false bottom and a Listerman sparge arm (lack of a better word at the moment.)

That was kind of my plan, but I figured instead of totally winging it, I'd ask advice.

I made 10 gals of the Recipe on the NB forum.
The brewer from SNPA(Steve Dressler) actually wrote the grain and hop bill for homebrewers by request.
IMHO- the recipe is dead nut! The SRMs I got were a little high-Im almost positive it was due in part to the amount of crystal 60L. A friend of mine used crystal 40 in its place and he got a perfect color, but the taste was off.
If I brew it again Ill lighten up on the 60L a little or maybe mix the 60 w/ some 40 half n half. The hop schedule is right on, and I finished both kegs pretty quick. Excellent recipe for a mini mash too.
Soak Grain Rinse repeat

How do we make things so difficult
