Hey Tasty -

I am very happy to report some success for both of us...

My version of your JBA just took 3rd place in the AHA Club Only American Ales competition. :pop

This was the first beer I ever entered in a competition so I'm pretty freaking happy right now, and I have a big chunk of this to share with you for an awesome recipe! You da man Tasty!

No you da man Todd. I get no greater enjoyment out of homebrewing than the enjoyment I get when I somehow help someone else find more joy in this great hobby. The success I've had and continue to have with Janet's Brown Ale has been very gratifying. But I get far more out of knowing that I have somehow influenced another brewers success. Being one of the top three beers amongst 73 carefully picked beers from clubs across the country, certainly says a lot about your brewing prowess. I'll take a small amount of credit but you're the brewer. The recipe is just and idea. Okay, maybe in this case, a good one.

Cheers, and brew strong,

Tasty

Update to original post.
Tasty,
Finally got around to brewing it in June. Used your hop schedule. Used pale ale malt instead of standard 2row, cause that's what I had. Turned out great. Entered in my first BJCP comp. on 9/11 and got 3rd in the american amber and american brown ales fight. My first medal. Thanks for an awesome recipe. Janet's Brown Ale will be brewed many times in the future.
PS Tasty's APA will be hitting a keg near me in the next couple of days.

I think my current keg is close to kicking...I'm afraid to pull another pint off because I'm excepting that PPFFTTTT noise.

Congratulations. I remember when I won my first medal. My beers had been getting better over time because of help from my good friend and founder of MoreBeer, Olin Schultz. He was excited as I was when I won a second for my Celebration Ale clone.

Glad you like the beer. I'm always getting into debates about the IBU contribution from mash hops. The JBA is the first recipe I ever developed. I had little idea what I was doing and was really trying to clone a commercial beer when I realized my mistakes were better than the beer I was trying to clone.

I got to pour both my Janet's Brown and my Tasty APA at a 20+ homebrew club meet-up over the weekend. That was a lot of fun. Sounds like you'll have both around at the same time like I do.

You started this thread back in January and I'd say it definitely came to a fruitful conclusion. A medal and a beer you like.

Therein lies the problem with small batch brewing. You can't beat the variety but the quantity sucks. I found out earlier in the week that I'm going to get to brew another 18bbl batch of Janet's Brown (Imperial) at Russian River next month. No video, no pro-am this time. All the focus is on the beer.
