Note: There is anecdotal evidence that hops are poisonous to dogs, so do not feed your dog hops...
Here's the recipe, multiply as needed:
- .75 lbs of spent grains (I used 30 and 10 caramel malt) -- well drained
1/2 cup of white flour
1/3 cup buckwheat flour (or whole wheat, or maybe white)
1 egg
2 tbl spoons of corn syrup (substitute a bit of sugar)
Mix ingredients and stir for several minutes (I used a kitchen aid with dough hook). The dough should be slightly wetter than bread dough, but in similar consistency, like very thick oatmeal... If its too wet, add more flour and stir in.
Spread dough over greased (*) cookie sheet to a depth of about 1/4" to 1/2". Just leave one big sheet of dough. Put into cold oven and bake at 350 for 30 minutes. (No need to preheat oven). After 30 minutes, the edges should start curling up and you should be able to flip it. Flip and cook for 20 minutes at 350. Flip again and lower oven temp to 250. Cook for another 30 minutes. Turn off oven, crack oven door, but leave the cookie sheet in for another hour. Your goal here is to get the stuff as dry as possible (**). DO NOT put these into tupperware until they are totally dry. I left mine out on top of the stove for a day and the Colorado air took care of the rest. When they are dry, you should be able to crack them into bite size pieces by hand.
(*) - I used a "silpat" silicon baking sheet cover and it didnt stick at all, otherwise use PAM.
(**) - If they are still moist, you will get mold after only 3-4 days on these treats.
