WYeast 1028 is not supposed to provide much in esters and more so a mineral profile. I recently made a braggot and expected more a profile of like a dortmunder yet got a wonderful estery profile like moorlands 'Old Speckled Hen'. I love the results, but am shocked from it. I maintained temps at 20C for ferm which is what I understand ideal.

Is 1028 known to throw out intense ester?

I used 1028 once and my results were similar to yours. The yeast description says it has a mineral profile. I'm not sure what that's supposed to taste like, but my beer was very fruity. It probably didn't help that I also used a lot of dark crystal malt, which provides a raisin flavor. I'd like to try the yeast again because I read a lot of good things.
