Only got 1/2 through carbonating my beer, then co2 ran out

Fri Apr 06, 2012 6:26 am

I was pressuring two corny kegs with 30lbs of pressure, for two days, then planned on dropping to serving pressure... problem is my co2 ran out after the first 24 hours (this was now approx 48 hours ago)...

I got my tank filled up this morning, question is do I just go about business as usual, pressurize at 30lbs for 24 more hours? I am new to this and dont know the effect of breaking up the pressurizing schedule.

Thanks ahead of time!

They were at 30lb of pressure for 24 hours, then for the last 48 hours they started at 30lb, but that has since dropped as CO2 dissolves into solution. Going back to 30 for another 24 hours is likely more than needed.

+1 assuming your beer is below 38F. Another 24 hours at 30psi seems to me like it would over-carbonate the beer. I'd go 20 psi for 12 hours, back off almost all the pressure and slowly pour an ounce in a glass. Then "taste" the carbonation and adjust to 12-18 psi for the next 12 depending on how close it seems to be. It's better to be a little undercarbonated so be conservative as you learn to force carbonate. It's more art than science. Somehow, I can shake a keg for 8-12 minutes and tell by the sound of my regulator when it's perfect. Don't ask me how I know. I can't explain it. :?

Awesome thanks for the tip guys.. Actually has not been carbonating at 38, more like 65 (thought i could fit both kegs in my fridge, but apparently not).

Just put it on 30lbs at noon today... I will check it out when I get home from work (will have been on about 6 additional hours by then)
