A new tap in the kitchen question

Tue Jun 22, 2010 12:16 pm

I have been searching around the net and getting conflicting info.
I have a kegerator in my basement that I want to run to my kitchen
My kitchen is on the level above my basement so I am looking at running line about 12 -15 feet at the most.
My kegerator has a tower on it that I was thinking of attaching a pvc pipe to, filing it with foam and running the line through it until i reach the area where I am placing the tap. A straight run up.
is there any good info on the web or if anyone has done this can you give me some tips
I am worried about the beer in the line staying cool.
Would I need to attach a fan from the kegerator to force the air up or will the foam keep it stable.
Suggestions or even better photos would be great
The wife and baby are going on vacation and leaving me home and I figured this is the best time to do it.

Thanks

Keeping the beer lines cool is going to be a major effort.

You will need a fan or pump in the lower refrigerator to pump air or gycol up to the tower.
You will also need an air or liquid return to the refrigerator for circulation.
Both lines will need to be insulated.
You need to account for the length of the beer lines as well as the elevation change. You will need an additional 4-5 psi per 10' of elevation change. Since you don't want to over carbonate the beer, you will need larger diameter lines to push the beer uphill as well as the longer distance (maybe 5/16" ID) while maintaining your normal serving pressure and temperature.

Doesn't sound like it's worth the effort... Just haul the kegs upstairs, like the rest of us. Well.... the rest of YOU, because I don't have a basement.
