Shelf life of tap filled bottles? Beer gun?

Wed Jun 16, 2010 9:21 am

I'm going to need some empty kegs soon so I'm thinking of bottling the remaining beer from the tap. I don't have a CP filler or beer gun, so I was thinking of jamming one of those bottling wands into my picnic tap and filling ala Tasty. Has anybody held on to bottles that were packaged this way for an extended period of time, like >6 months? How long until you were able to taste oxidation, and what were the storage conditions? I assume that CP filled bottles aren't significantly different than kegs (JZ claims 5 years+), but I'm wondering if I keep them cold if tap-filled bottles would stay relatively oxidation free for 6 months to a year if stored cold? What about the beer-gun, does that CO2 purge make it just as good as CP filling? I could see rigging up a CO2 line next to the bottling wand and giving each bottle a quick blast before filling from the tap if it's worth it.

I recently tasted some 6-9 month old bottles of APA and IPA I bottled like this. No purge, just capping on foam and keeping a vinyl tube at the bottom of the bottle so I filled bottom up. I tased some sherry like notes but honestly, it wasn't bad. Also, they were stored in the mid 60's so if I kept them in a bottle fridge at ~40 degree temps the effect would have been much less I imagine. I say go for it!

It'll depend a lot on the beer - a light lager or a cream ale or something, you'll notice teh oxidation a lot faster.

But... you can purge Oxygen without a fancy beer gun anyway.

One picnic tap for your beer... another on the end of a gas line. Same set up as the beer line - jam a bit of 10m line into the picnic tap, shove it down into the bottle, give it a blast of C02.... pull the thing out of the bottle while still letting C02 through, so you dont pull O2 in as you withdraw the line... shove your beer side in straight away.

That'll help stave off the oxidation monster for a little longer
