Electric Kettle with Muslin Bags

Wed Nov 04, 2015 2:00 pm

So, any one use Muslin bags in an all electric kettle? My worry is the bag coming into contact with the element during boil and possibly scorching? 4500W element, all stainless ULWD. When doing 5 gallon batches, the element is only 1" below the wort height at 5.5 gallons. FYI.

Thanks!

I have an all electric system (using a blichmann boil coil) and I wouldn't hesitate to put a bag in it. So long as it is covered the element isn't going to be much hotter than the wort (maybe 230 or something), which is quite a way from how hot you need to get the bag to scorch/burn/etc. If you got a large portion of the heater covered in the bag then you might have a problem, but as long as there is some wort in there circulating I think you should be fine.
