I used black iron 1/2 pipe and cast iron 12 inch burners. No problems at all sometimes it's better to use the kiss principal. Most people try to over engineer what ever they are building, to bad you haven't seen my brew stand.

I lost a couple of days, but the welder was able to plug the hole with minimal effort. The gas beam held 58 PSI of gas overnight - which is good enough for me.

Got the stand back together and tested out the burners. The intermittent pilot on the HLT is awesome. The ASCO valve on the BK burner sounds like a gunshot when it opens. That was a little unsettling at first.

So I am probably within a week of brewing. However, I have my ferm chamber occupied with a lager for the next few weeks. I still have a few odd and ends left to tie up - not the least of which is the control panel. I think I am going to have to do a temporary one, since I blew my budget on everything else.

I'm not sure what you need for your control panel, but Virtual Village has some fairly inexpensive PID controllers. (They're priced in Canadian $ so the actual price is much less.) I've been bargain hunting on the web for a while trying to bring my system in at under $300. So if you tell me what else you need, I might be able to point you to a decent price.
Virtual Village also has very inexpensive refractometers.

I'm kinda sold on the Auberins PID, because it supports RTD probes:

Auberins also has some really nice probes that have a quick disconnect:

So, yeah... That shit is expensive - but at least I will have fractional temps, and I will be able to disconnect everything after the brew session for cleaning and storage.

I think the PIDs are the same ones as V V. The price is right in line. Those probes are pricey though! I was planning on going with the probes That these guys get for their Love controllers. I want to say they're about $10 each. But the ones you found look like they're actually going to work better. Thanks for the links.

What are these RTD probes? I have two PIDs intended for use with type K probes. I was going to get probes from http://www.omega.com/ , but the disconnect on those looks very convenient.

You would have to make sure that your PIDs can be configured to use RTD probes, in addition to the K type. The auberins ones have a tighter range when configured to use the RTD probes, and will actually give you a decimal place - since we don't need +- 1000 degrees anyway.

Man that Omega stuff is way too expensive. It doesn't look like it would work as well for homebrewing either. I think I'll stick with the links that Mylo gave us unless I find something better before I get around to building my CP. I think that is highly unlikely. The only problem I have with Auber's temp. probes is that the wires are so short.
