Mash hopping

Has anyone ever come across research about mash hoping?

I had always thought it didn't really do anything, but I noticed when I add mash hops in Beersmith it increases the estimated bitterness. After some googling I’ve found a lot of conflicting information, but no real research. I’m curious because I mash hop from time to time because I enjoy the smell(during the mash), and it’s a good way to get rid of last year’s hops. Yesterday I added a pound of 2012 MT hood to my mash and it smelled awesome. But now I’m thinking this may not be a good practice and could be making my beers lest consistent.

All the info IS conflicting.

Personally, I don't like it too much. Seems to take a lot of hops with little final impact, but that's just how I perceive it.

Tasty is probably the biggest mash hopping proponent I know.
Hopefully he'll chime in.
