Harvesting old yeast.

Thu Feb 21, 2013 8:52 pm

I have two carboys that have been in my garage for about a week and a half with about one inch of the fermented beer on top of the yeast cake, it have been about 34-50 degrees ambient temperature, I wonder if anyone has tried to revive an old yeast cake? I have a stir plate and feel like throwing a 3000 milll dme starter together, the only thing I worry about would be possible contamination or mutation. The batch the yeast made turned out really really good. That would be the only reason for me to try and revisit the yeast. Thanks take care. :jnj

Personally, even I would dump those.... probably.

Are the carboys covered? You could make a small test starter and give it a smell/taste test before committing to the big starter.
