Hop Bag for Whirlpool Addition

Tue Feb 12, 2013 7:34 am

Hey guys,

Wanted to pick some brains on here about whirlpool hopping. I have gone to using whirlpool hop additions and have noticed a huge difference in flavor and aroma. The downside to this is I have noticed with the larger late additions creating more floating hop matter that ends up in the fermenter and makes for a rather vigorous and messy fermentation. Has anyone used a hop bag and seen the same results as just tossing pellets into the boil kettle after flameout?

I use weighted hop bags for all my additions. It allows me to pull the hops out after chilling and drain the wort they absorb back into the kettle. Cleanup is simplified also. I use the additions that recipes call for and the beers come out plenty hoppy. I haven't done a controlled test. My favorite hop bags are "fruit bags" sold by Crate and Barrel. They are large enough to hold 2-3 oz of whole hops with breathing room. They are sturdy, washable and reusable. I use a finer bag sold at homebrew stores for pellets.
Hope this helps :jnj

That helps a ton! Thank you Captain! What do you use for weights?
