when to whirlpool?

Sat Jan 19, 2013 12:00 pm

I'm new to the whole whirlpool concept. If I'm chilling with an immersion chiller, do I execute the whirlpool before or after the chilling process? I'm boiling 12 gallons right now, so the sooner the help the better.
thanks.

Boil. Whirlpool Hot. Chill.

Edit: and drink a few in the process. Whirlpool long enough to get it spinning (no need for a big vortex or anything, just a good spin) & let it rest for 15-20 min to settle out. Don't pull the wort out of the kettle at full throttle. Adjust it up until you're comfortable not pulling off the cone - not that's a problem with all kettles, but it can be.

If your chilling with an immersion chiller, wait until after you've chilled, then rest, then siphon. You can't get a good whirlpool going with the chiller in the wort.

I've tried it both ways and this works the best. If you whirlpool before you chill the cone gets disturbed when you move the IC around.
