Re: small beer from 2nd runnings

Ok cool, I will definitely go for it then, adding an extra pound of grain to the mash and having some dme handy.

thanks

On the subject of barley wines, is it common to lose efficiency on these big beers and is there any way to predict/calculate it beforehand? Or is it just something you have to work out by trial and error? I ask because I brewed a RIS today and could not hit my numbers. Was way off preboil, did some Ray Daniels gravity point calculations, added 1.5 lb dme, and thought I was good, but still ended up 9 points low. (I'm mashing/ batch sparging in a coleman xtreme 52 quart cooler)

It really depends on your system, some are more efficient than others when scaling up to the really big brews. I should also note that the technique you're referring to is called a Partigyle. I'd give that show a listen for some more insight. I've done it a couple times. It's fun.
