Get one of each in front of some people who you trust the opinions and palettes of. It would be useful if they have some understanding of style.

Thanks Spider. I think I will. One of my HBCs is having a small beer competition on Sunday. I think I'll bring them down there. I think they will have a few bjcp judges there.

Fast forward a few months later. This beer bombed at my homebrew club competition only getting an 18! (Not a bjcp comp. or judges) However, I just took home the silver medal with this baby at the Great Arizona Homebrew Competition!

That's not surprising to me at all because that's been my experience with those kinds of beers. I've made them, written them off as garbage, forgotten about them, looked in a closet and said "what's this beer? Oh yeah, it's that shit beer I made several months ago.", tried it, and then been blown away by the goodness. Those beers brewed with huge crystal malt additions are terrible at first, but if you let them age, they eventually become some of the best beers you can brew provided the recipe isn't too "kitchen sink". I don't do it very often because I'm impatient....and Congrats!! :pop
