Since my lhbs only sells old yeast I plan on trying to coax some yeast I washed about a month or so ago back to life and brew Sunday with it.

At this moment my ambient temp in my house is to warm upstairs and to cool in the basement for such a small amount of wort to stay where it should.

So, I am wondering what ill effects could possibly arise from a 1qt starter fermenting at high 70's to possibly mid 80's cause? I of course would try to decant as much of the noxious beer off I could before pitching. Besides robust yeast growth and an attractive proposition for nasties to grow in, what else could go wrong? I am out of ideas of ill effects and already picked the brains of my home brewing buddies.

So now I leave it up to the Army to put their two cents in.
Or JZ if he is reading posts sometime between tonight and the time I make up a starter tomorrow.

There are worse things you could do than have it a bit warm.
But just HOW cool is that basement?? If it is in the upper 60 you are probably ok... PLUS you could put a cardboard box over it and a lightbulb inside to heat it a bit, plus keep it above ambient.

Currently sitting at 60 degrees even though it was 90 outside today...
Still got a few weeks before I have to plug in my fermentation fridge.

As of now I have a full batch of brown porter in the basement and that topped out a 66 degrees even at full krausen.

I'm afraid a qt. of starter will fall in temp to fast for fermentation to start.
I should prolly also include the yeast I plan to get going is Wyeast 3787.
A somewhat warm fermentation friendly yeast but I don't think that warm is friendly. The growler full of star san I will use for the starter is currently at 82.

Maybe it's just me.... but putting a light bulb inside a carboard box would freak me the fuck out. You might hear different sirens then you heard tonight, Bub. Maybe use one of those big oval metal wash buckets, instead.
