Perfect size for a freezer

Mon May 19, 2008 3:02 pm

Looking to get a freezer to start doing some proper fermentation. I do have a fridge in the garage but I always have a good 40-50 bottles of beer in there and there is NO WAY I can bring those suckers in the kitchen. The wife is already giving me '' that look''.

I wanted to get some info on what size you think I should take a good look at? It will not be used to serve, I already have a ''kegerator'' so it will be used only for lagering.
Winter up here can get a bit rough, so I do plan on having at least 2-3 beers in there for the long run that will be brewed at the end of fall for winter time.
5 gallon batches.

Anyone have a good setup?

I think since you already have a kegerator and this is just for fermentation, an upright freezer would be the best bet.

I just agreed to buy one on craigslist... 18 or 19 cubic feet or something. The dimensions are 32x28x65, so I'm expecting to be able to fit quite a bit in there. I'll have to wait and see, but I was even thinking it might be tall enough inside to stack kegs on top of each other or keep a shelf in there and really maximize my storage space.

We'll see, though.

Cut out several paper circles the size of a keg, take with you to gauge the number of kegs a freezer will hold at your local Sears or whatever. Then you will get an idea of the cubic foot freezer you are looking for. Also good for checking out the actual freezers before buying.

I'm looking for one myself at auctions to hold 6 kegs for lagering/cold crashing/storage, take my cut-outs with me to the auctions I go to.

You mentioned Fermentation and Lagering... since those two events are not EVEN close to being set at same temp, you might need two! Also, your fermentation freezer will typically be smaller than one used for lagering.... SO, which one is first on the list?
