Star San sucked in to the carboy.

Sun Feb 03, 2008 9:52 am

I pulled a rookie mistake and cold crashed my carboy while it was still hooked up to the blow off bucket. Anyways I sucked about a quart of star san into my five gallons of beer.

My main question is if any knows if the beer is still safe to drink. A pint of diluted star san is about 1/50 of the total volume. I can't taste it but I don't want to get sick or get people sick.

Its funny I have brewed about 150 batches of beer and this is the first time I have done something this stupid.

If your star san was mixed as per the directions, I wouldn't worry about it. Its non toxic at the directed dilution. Mixed correctly there is only 1 oz. in 640 ozs. of water. So by the time you run out all the dilutions, the actual content in your beer is minor, to much beer last night to run all the numbers this morning. The one thing I love about star san the most, is its safety and the fact that its all food grade ingredients.

When you say you sucked a quart, im assuming it is a quart of diluted starsan. If so I dont think youll have too many problems though. Proceed as normal. RDWHAHB

I've heard it can help to filter it through a chunk of shag carpet.

I did the same thing once and compounded the error by throwing the beer out. I should have just moved forward and tried it. Wasted five gallons of beer. Pinhead mistake + bad decision = five less gallons of beer.
