Rust spots in freezer

I just picked up a 15.3 ft^3 chest freezer off of Craigslist for fermentation (and eventually kegging). It has some rust spots on the inside though. My first question, is it absolutely necessary to clean those off? Or is it just a cosmetic issue? Second, if I do clean them off, do I just sand it and throw some Rustoleum Appliance paint on there?

Is it the metal rusting or just rust stains on the plastic? If it's on the metal I'd clean it with navel jelly and then paint the hell out of it. If it's just stains try some CLR.

Both. Some places it's just stains, others the paint has chipped away. So clean all the stains with CLR, naval jelly the spots where the paint is chipped, and give the whole thing a coat of the Rustoleum stuff?

You might prime if first then paint it...

+1 on the priming thing

I painted and old fridge without priming and all the paint flaked off

also if you plan to paint one spot I would plan to paint the whole thing as you will never get the colors to match

CLR didn't really work. It got some of the light stains out. Naval jelly, however, seems to have done the trick. I just put the first coat of paint on there, so I'll give it another couple of those and see how it looks. Thanks guys.
