starter questions. now with yeast nutrient qty

I have excess wort from yesterday. Yesterday I fit 4 x quarts in my canner and got to 254 for more than 18 minutes.

I have 4 more to do today. But I was thinking, should I add my yeast nutrient (diammonium phosphate) before I do the canning?

Also, the instructions for the diammonium phosphate are "add one tsp per 5 gallons". For a starter, what to do? Assuming a 5 gallon ferment for each quart? Or if I'm adding one quart starter for 10G, then 2 tsp in each quart???

When I can starters I normally make a 5 gallon batch of starter wort (base grain only) and boil that just long enough to get a good hot break. I add the recommended amount of nutrient to that wort in the boil kettle before boiling so that it gets dissolved.

On those occasions that I do just a small batch of starter wort for a single batch of beer I don't even mess with adding nutrient to avoid overdoing it. The excess wort from a regular batch of beer should have plenty of nutrient for your starter. Just remember to add nutrient to the batch of beer to which you are adding that starter.
