Stuck fermentation on first beer?

Thu Apr 23, 2009 4:41 pm

I brewed a batch of JZ's Blonde Ale last Saturday (18th) with extract. Everything went great and there was a vigourous fermentation 24 hours later. The original gravity was 12.6 plato. But today fermentation activity as seen from the airlock has seemed to stopped. I took a measurement and it was 7.9 plato (the recipie final gravity calls for 6.6 plato). I think my fermentation might be stuck. I used a yeast starter, full wort boil, immersion chiller, temp controller set to 67F, but maybe didn't aireate as well as I should of. What do I do?

What is this Plato you speak of?

Just kidding. What temp are you fermenting at currently?

Wait a couple of days and take another reading. If the gravity is lower, you're golden. If it's the same pitch another active starter and cross your :nutters: and hope, IMO. Good Luck!

6.6 Plato final gravity? You should be shooting for something a little lower than that, like in the low 3's. Warm it up, roust it up and wait another week. Don't rush it.

Looks like I should have relaxed....... It took a reading today and it went down to 7 plato. I was under the impression that you could use your refractometer to measure your S.G. and potential alcohol if you have the original gravity. I used the MoreBeer! spreadsheet from their website. The final reading of 6.6 corresponds to Jamil's final gravity in his recipie. I am right to assume that the spreadsheet works?

thanks

I'd double check that. In my copy of BCS the Blonde Ale recipe calls for a FG of 2.8 Plato.

The spreed sheet should work. I still use my hydrometer once fermentation is under way so I can't personally vouch for it.

You are right...the recipie FG is 2.8 P or 1.011. However, the MoreBeer spreadsheet says that 6.6 P is 1.011 and that 2.8 P is 0.99. So I am confused. Can I use my refractometer to get my FG and what should it be reading? Am I screwing something up? Any help would be appreciated.

Gave up on the refractometer. Took a hygrometer reading and it was 1.011. Bottled this morning....hope my first beer doesn't suck!
