My First Lager

Mon Apr 13, 2009 6:39 am

I've decided to make the jump into Lager - I bought a kit from my LHBS

The kit came with dry yeast (saflager s-23)

The temp on the yeast is 51-75F Ideally 51-59F

My question is do i need to make a starter for the dry yeast

I've been told that a starter with dry yeast is not recommended

but i've also been told that you must make a started with lager yeast

You don't need to make a starter with the dry yeast, but you should rehydrate it prior to pitching. Check Mr. Malty to see how many packets you should be pitching, chances are it's more than 1.
