Hydrometer IN the fermenter

Wed Mar 18, 2009 8:34 pm

Anybody ever drop a sanitized hydrometer INTO the fermenter instead of withdrawing a sample? If not, is there any reason why I shouldn't?

I've done it before. Just make sure you don't aerate before that because the foam will make it near impossible to read the hydrometer.

Thanks.

Krausen has just fallen and I want to put it in late. I was contemplating putting it in before krausen but I figured the "ring" would stick to the hydro and make it unreadable.

OHHHHHH, you mean LEAVE it in there..... that would be cool, but I think you're right about the krausen sticking to it and messing up the reading. The CO2 from the fermentation would collect on the hydrometer and mess with the reading too. They should invent something that constantly gives you a gravity reading. That would be convenient.

hmmm..... I wonder if you could ferment on a scale? If you know the OG (from the hydro reading) and precise volume, would the scale read lighter as it ferments?

They do, sort of, though I doubt you'll like the price. In-Line BRIX Monitor

One of the BIG boys - Noonan, Mosher, Daniels, don't remember who - talks about pitching, then drawing off about a quart once fermentation really gets going but prior to high krausen. You can let that quart ferment out in it's own container and take all the hyd readings you want. Seems to me like that quart would finish fermentation a few days sooner than the the rest of the beer though. It could tell you what terminal gravity is going to look like a few days before the main batch finishes, but may not be useful for much else. Heh, I must be getting this wrong. Does anyone know what I am talking about? :aaron
