Im seceondary fermenting in my sencondary glass carboy. I have it in my stand up shower in my second bathroom that i dont use. But every once in a while people open the door and turn on the light even tho i tell everyone not to go in there. Theres no windows in the bathroom. So its normaly dark in there. Will the bathroom light affect my beer like the sun light will.

There is always a possibility. Grab a black outdoor heavy duty garbage bag and place the carboy in it. Tie it up at the top. Ive had success with this as my cat has tendency to open the closet that my carboys are in so he can watch the airlocks and yeasties doing their thing.

Just keep an eye on your temp as the bag will act as an insulator.

Incandescent lights are generally no problem at all. When I have to do fermentation somewhere other than the fermentation fridge, I cut a whole in the bottom of a paper grocery sack and slip that over the carboy with the neck and the fermentation lock sticking out of the hole. Those paper sacks are at least biodegradable unlike the black plastic bags.

I just wrap my carboys in a towel. Added benefit is that if it starts fermenting too warm, I pour some water on the towel to cool it off a couple degrees.

I cover the fermenting carboys with a couple old t-shirts. The same shirts then get used to clean up any spills, drips, etc during racking.

+1 i do the same...


bug....incandescent lights will skunk a beer. It is visible light that destroys beer and not UV light. 99% of all light bulbs put out ZERO UV light. Also, why would the visible color of a beer bottle determine its ability to block UV light? UV light is not visible to the eye.

Oh and one more thing...CLEAR glass absorbs about 90% UV light. Ever get a sunburn while sitting next to a closed window? (didn't think so)
