Star Sans Solution for Rehydrating Dry Yeast?

Mon Feb 16, 2009 1:10 pm

Just thought of it last night while I was pitching some rehydrated Windsor into one of my Stout Carboys. "Damn, sure would be nice to use Star Sans for this." Any reason why I couldn't use a Star Sans solution to rehydrate my yeast prior to pitching instead of what I usually have to do (Boil water for 20 minutes and cool)?

Yes, there is a great reason. It would kill all of the yeast.

Will residual foam in the vessel kill all the yeast?

OK, but other than that whole yeast-killing thing it sounds like a perfectly fine idea, right?

No, no, no.
You have to do a 50:50 StarSan:Iodophore solution.
Or better yet, ammonia and bleach. That should work.
