Do I need a vortex when using a stir plate?

Sat Jan 17, 2009 5:31 am

Do I need a vortex when using a stir plate? I just bought a 5000 ml Erlenmeyer and didn’t think to get a bigger stir bar. I’m making a 3000 ml starter, but can’t seem to get a vortex/. Is it fine, or should I transfer it to one of my smaller flasks?

Thanks!

As long as you have constant turn over of liquid on the surface of your starter, that is all you need. That is enough action to force out CO2 and to keep the yeast in suspension, for those guys to grow.

Big starter, are you making a lager?

I will get back to you via the PM about the competition.

Thanks, guys!
Yeah, I'm bresing a Maibock tomorrow. I decided to go with the 5000 ml flask because I was so close to a boil over when I made the started in my 2000 ml. I can't wait to fill that 5000ml flask with a MONSTER starter!

Thanks, Mylo,
I've heard great things about this stuff...I think it's time to get some.
