Using Fermaid K during fermentation

Tue Nov 25, 2008 11:54 am

I heard on the 11/20/05 Sunday show Jamil uses Fermaid K during fermentation. He said he uses 1 gram per 5 gallons to help high gravity beers finish properly. Does anyone know at what point you add during the fermentation and do you add all the Fermaid K at once? Also, can this be used in low gravity beers as well?

Thanks,
Marty

You really only need it for high gravity beers, to help the yeast finish. I just follow the directions, pitch it when fermentation is 1/3 done, rehydrate in sterile water first.

Yeah it's a mix of DAP, autolyzed yeast and other nutrients. I haven't used it in a brew yet but I use it in all my meads now in staged additions and they finish out much faster now. Good stuff!

If you guys don't use Fermaid K for high gravity beers what do you use? I am making my first high gravity beer (Wee Heavy) and am trying to plan out the process I am going to use.

I only use it on high gravity beers. I just used it on a Triple that went from 1.090 to 1.008 at 68-70 degrees in 10 days. I'm pretty sure the extra nutrients helped.

I like the idea of using the fermaid K with my high graivty beers. I did a belgian dark strong I'm very happy with that I used it on. Gooooooood stuff!

Any thoughts on generally using this stuff with lager yeasts?

What's the difference between Fermaid K and Servomyces, from what I'm getting is that they're both yeast nutrients. I've heard people using them together, such as throwing a little fermaid k in their yeast starter and throwing a Servomyces pill in the last ten minutes of their boil.

Would you also then throw fermaid K in the beer at some point during fermentation after using a servomyces pill?
I've never used either, but have had plenty of pooped out fermentations and under attenuated beers so I'm looking at starting to use one or the other or both depending on the recommendations I get here.

The next beer I intend on doing is going to be a tripel.
