Turnover time on an ordinary English Bitter

Fri Nov 07, 2008 7:03 am

So, this is my first beer that I will be kegging and accordingly I'm extra anxious to get it kegged up. I brewed it last Saturday and am wondering if I could keg it after 7-10 days without any ill effects? I'll be sure to make sure it has reached its terminal gravity first. I've heard some people say you can turn an English Mild from brew day to serving in 7 days and the beer I've brewed is similar in gravity at least (low 1.040s). Should I just be patient?

you can easily turn an O-bitter in a week, especially if you used WLP002. make sure you are at terminal grav, maybe add some gelatine (but you probably won't need it) put a bag with a half oz or so of EKG in the keg, and drink up.

Hey thanks for the advice. I actually used the Burton Ale Yeast, I think WLP023. Where does one get gelatine anyway? I have a half oz of EKG in plug hops that I can throw in the keg.

You can get gelatin from your LHBS.

I get gelatin at the grocery store. Knox brand unflavored, same aisle as Jell-o i think. Half a pouch poured in a cup of sterile (or boiled and cooled) water and left to sit for 15 min. Then heat, stir, dump.

I go to the grocery store and buy Knox unflavored gelatin. Cheap and very easy to find.
Heat it up with some water and add it to the keg. Cold helps gelatin work faster. Also the
less trub/yeast you can transfer into the keg the more quickly you can get it to clear.
The time is near the mission clear,
Its later than you think, before you slip
into the night you'll want something to drink.

Do I have to leave the gelatin in the keg for a long period of time before drinking? Or does it clear things up rather quickly?

It's quick. A matter of hours I think.
